In order to have healthy white teeth, choosing the right food in your diet is very important. The good food in your diet will help achieve good oral hygiene. Establishing good nutritional habits since we were kids can be really beneficial throughout having nice healthy teeth. Why it is good nutritional food are really important for teeth? This is because nutrition in foods affects your oral health. Foods that you eat come in contact with bacteria and germs that already live in your mouth. Plaque will stay on the teeth if you don’t brush it. The plaque then will combines with sugars and starches that were found in the foods. As a result, acid will be produced and it will attacks the enamel on the teeth, and finally causes decay and a great pain.
So, examples of good food for teeth are like milk, nuts, cheese, cereals, bread, and vegetables. This is because all of these types of foods contain low quantity of sugar or starches, or some of it doesn’t even have sugar in it. Besides, all these foods will make your teeth strong. However, when it comes to food for the micro-organisms that live in our mouths, sugar isn't the only culprit anymore. All fermentable carbohydrates which include all types of sugar and starch, both in liquid and solid form, should be taken into consideration. Micro-organisms ferment carbohydrates to form acids, which sets the scene for decay.
Even if you only eat healthy foods, you still have to go through good dental regime in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. This is because even you avoid sugary foods, it still will produce plaque if you don’t brush it.
What kind of foods that really need to be limited in order to have healthy strong teeth are like carbonated sodas, sweet fruit drinks and sugary snack foods. Sugars in food will stick to your teeth and plaque can melt the surface of teeth. That’s why these kind of foods need to be limited. You don’t really need to avoid these foods, but just make sure eat a balanced diet, and most importantly, brush your teeth at least twice daily, and also floss daily.

Below are the types of foods that are good, and bad for teeth. Bad foods for teeth:
- Any form of sugar
- Fresh and canned fruits
- Carbonated drinks
- Cookies and crackers.


Good foods for teeth:
- Cheese
- Gum containing xylitol

Carbohydrates are actually part of any healthy diet, so you shouldn’t eliminate all the bad foods. What you can do is combine the bad and good foods whenever possible. Another brilliant idea is to finish your meal with a sugar-free gum. Time is of the essence when it comes to oral health. The more time bacteria has to metabolism fermentable carbohydrates, produce acids and cause a drop in salivary ph, the greater the negative effect on your teeth. So, avoid continuous snacking and sipping of drinks, allow time between meals for saliva to neutralize acids and repair the teeth, decrease frequency and contact with acidic foods and drinks, and avoid brushing teeth immediately after consuming acidic foods, drinks, citrus fruits and juices as this allows time for demineralization to occur.
